In 1949, our family moved from Ft Thomas, KY to Silver Spring, MD. While my dad began his new job with NASA, my brother, mother and I lived on Cedar Avenue with Dad's parents so I could finish 2nd grade.
There was no kindergarten at the old stone school, so my brother stayed home all day. I remember being in a classroom with connecting desks; the desktop opened where we kept our papers and pencils. Each desk had a hole in the upper right corner for a bottle of ink.
My teacher was old and very welcoming to a shy new student; as a new teacher, she had taught my Aunt Betty about 22 years earlier. That was always a close bond between my aunt and I.
