2012 Herb Study Schedule

Learn more about herb uses in food, crafts and health. The Herb Study will begin on Wednesday, July 11. Check the weekly Lakesider newspaper for further details.

WEEK 3 (July 11)

Pesto Possibilities
Presenter:  Jan Hilty

Traditional and non-traditional herbal and vegetable pestos and their many uses will be presented. Pestos are not just for pasta anymore. Recipes and tastings will be available.

 

WEEK 4 (July 18)

Bleach Printing
Presenter:  Dottie McDowell

Soft Scrub Bleach will be used to print herbs and leaves on dark colored fabrics. This technique is called discharge printing, or more simply, bleach printing. Each person should bring a dark 100% cotton tee shirt to the class (black, purple and red work well). Also bring things that you would like to print onto the shirt or fabric. The plant material should be soft and pliable, but could be flattened out in a phone book for a day to make it more manageable.

 

WEEK 5 (July 25)

Personal Gardens
Presenter:  Kathy Anderson

Come with questions and problems you are having in your garden and the group will offer suggestions to help. Share good things that have happen as well.

 

WEEK 6 (August 1)

Herbal Salves
Presenter:  Linda Green

8 a.m.  Note change in time

Herbalist Linda Green will teach about the benefits of making your own herbal salve. She will discuss the plants used and their properties and demonstrate salve making. Participants will gain an understanding of how to create a calendula olive oil healing salve and the benefits of this great healing salve. Each participant will bring a sample salve home. A donation of $5 for supplies is requested.  

 

WEEK 7 (August 8)

Herb of the Year...
"The Rose"

The rose is thought of as romantic and full of virtue. It is often used as a gift of love.  It is also has many other uses in the home, the kitchen and the garden. Come and learn the history, lore and uses of the rose.

 

WEEK 8 (August 15)

Medihoney Presenter:  Cindy Gecih

Honey is used in hospitals for healing with burn patients and other areas. This discussion will focus on the medical uses of honey.

 

WEEK 9 (August 18)

End of Season Tea (Pre-registration required)

4 p.m. (Note change in time)
Individuals who have consistently participated in the Herb Study during the season are invited to this culminating event.  Details on pre-registration will be shared during the Herb Study meetings.  Participants are asked to bring a dish to share with the group using a favorite herb, as well as the recipe for the dish.
