The Lakeside Chautauqua Literary & Scientific Circle (CLSC) is a local organization affiliated with the New York Chautauqua Institute CLSC, which was formed in 1878 to support reading and learning about nature, art, literature, philosophy and science. The New York chapter of the CLSC provides a reading list each year, from which the local membership chooses two books to read during the off-season for discussion at the round table sessions each summer.
Membership in the CLSC is open to anyone interested in reading, learning and discussing a wide variety of literary works, both fiction and nonfiction. The long-term goal of all members of the CLSC is to read 12 works from an approved list of books that extends back to the year 1878. Those who complete this task are honored as official graduates of the CLSC.
The Lakeside CLSC usually holds two round table discussions each summer, one in June and another in August, during which the members discuss the books chosen for that year.
The 2012 books are Justice: What Is the Right Thing To Do? by Michael Sandel and In the Garden of the Beasts by Erik Larson. The first book, Justice: What Is the Right Thing To Do?, will be discussed on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 and the second, In the Garden of the Beasts, will be discussed on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012. The round tables are held on at 3:30 pm in the Fountain Inn Aigler Room. Prior reading of the book is required.
Both books are customarily available at Lakeside’s bookstore, The Fine Print, located on Walnut Avenue.
