Lakeside Sailing Center

Located directly in front of Hotel Lakeside along the lakefront, the Lakeside Sailing Center staff is available to help with sailboat and kayak rentals, storage, launching of private boats and sailing lessons.

Sailing Lessons

Two sailing lessons are offered on a weekly basis and are taught by the staff for $85/person. Check the weekly Lakesider newspaper for the cost of daily lessons. Minimum age for class participation is 10. Details regarding each course are as follows:

Kids Setting Sail Program

All kids ages 5-10 are invited for a free sailing adventure. The Lakeside Sailing Center (LSC) and Society of Old Salts members are offering a free Sunfish sailboat ride from 2:30-4:30 p.m. on Sundays. All participants must be able to swim and have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver. Contact the LSC at (419) 798-4461, ext. 266 for details. Sign-up from 2:15-4:30 p.m. Sunday at the LSC. Limited instructional rides are available for youth ages 11-16. Contact coordinator Bill Maenner at (856) 692-1245 or visit 308 Maple Ave. for details. Weekly certified sailing instruction is available through the LSC for ages 10 and up.

Beginner Course

Acquire the basic sailing skills to handle a small sailboat, with an emphasis on the development of self-reliance and safety.  In this course, students will learn to identify and describe the function of the equipment, parts of the sailboat, wind direction and points of sail. 

Safety Counts

Each Beginner's Course participant will learn important water safety rules.

  • Demonstrate safe conduct while in or around other sailboats
  • Show care with rigging, de-rigging and storage of sails and equipment
  • Learn specific techniques when sailing along an established course or assisting a capsized boat or person(s) overboard

Course Objectives

  • Rigging and de-rigging of the Sunfish
  • Sailing double-handed, progressing towards single-handed
  • Learning the five basic Right-of-Way Rules and points of sail in relation to wind direction
  • Sailing both a windward/leeward and triangular course

Intermediate Course

To enhance pre-established sailing knowledge through an emphasis on "on water" sailing.

Course Objectives

  • Rigging and de-rigging the Sunfish
  • Sailing single-handed
  • Learning the five basic Right-of-Way Rules and points of sail in relation to wind direction
  • Sailing on a rectangular or triangular course

Sailing Races

August Cup Race

The August Cup Race is a race for all keel boats 22 feet or larger.  The race is usually a triangular course incorporating the South Passage Buoy, depending on wind conditions. There is no pre-registration or cost to participate.  Read the weekly Lakesider newspaper for details regarding the event.

Mouse Island Race

The Society of Old Salts (S.O.S.) sponsors the Annual Mouse Island Race.  The Mouse Island Race includes single-handed Sunfish, single-handed Lasers and double-handed Sunfish classes.  All age groups will sail together from the Lakeside Sailing Center around Mouse Island and back to Lakeside. 

This is often a long race depending on the wind conditions, usually lasting between two and five hours.  Novice sailors should partner with experienced sailors.  Trophies will be awarded to the first three finishers in both Sunfish classes and for the first place only in the Laser class.  There is no entry fee for the race.  Read the weekly Lakesider newspaper for details regarding the event.

Sailing Regatta

The 35th Annual Lakeside Sailing Regatta will take place on Saturday, Aug. 4 and Sunday, Aug. 5 at the Lakeside Sailing Center (LSC). There will be junior Sunfish, senior Sunfish, double-handed Sunfish and Laser classes. Registration will take place from 7:30-8:30 a.m. on Aug. 4 at the LSC, immediately followed by a skippers’ meeting.

Weather-permitting, the race schedule will be as follows:

Saturday, Aug. 4
Junior Sunfish (15 and under): 9 a.m.
Senior Sunfish & Laser: 11:30 a.m.
Double-Handed Sunfish: 2 p.m.
S.O.S. Regatta Picnic: 6 p.m. in the Lower Pavilion Room

Sunday, August 5
Junior Sunfish: 11:30 a.m.
Senior Sunfish & Laser: 1:30 p.m.
Regatta Awards: 5 p.m. in the Upper Pavilion Room

Swimming at the Dock

Swimming Lessons

Free swimming lessons are held 9:30-10 am Monday-Friday for all ages.

Baby Pool

Infants and toddlers are welcome to enjoy the guarded Baby Pool located to the right of the beach.

Lifeguard Hours

Lifeguards are on duty from 10 am-6 pm Monday-Saturday and 12-6 pm Sunday.


Kelleys Island Swim

Each year a few brave swimmers tackle the Lake Erie waters between Lakeside and Kelleys Island for the Annual Kelleys Island Swim.  Interested swimmers must complete the two-mile qualifying swim before entrance in the four-mile swim between Lakeside's L-Dock and the Newman Ferry Dock on Kelleys Island is granted. Kayak

The Lakeside Sailing Center also offers kayak rentals to guests and residents of Lakeside.  For more information regarding rentals, visit the Lakeside Sailing Center.


Lakeside Wooden Boat Society (LWBS) Pond Boat Building

LWBS is offering pond boat building for children at the tent in Central Park. Under the direction of Lakesider Sally Adams and her group of volunteers, children can build balloon powered jet boats (K to 2nd-grade) or super sailboats (3rd to 5th-grades).

Using hammers, simple saws and a drill press, children are guided using built jigs and precut parts donated by craftsman Dick Swanson. Classes are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays. Balloon powered jet boat classes are 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursdays. Super sailboat classes are 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Registration is on the lawn in front of the Rhein Center and the cost ($10) is collected at this time.
