While his father, Rutherford B. Hayes, is remembered for being America’s 19th president, Colonel Webb Cook Hayes carved out a very different legacy on the battlefield. This talk will explore Hayes’ experience during the Spanish American War and the Philippine-American War, where he commanded troops in America’s emerging overseas empire. Drawing on firsthand accounts and historical context, this presentation examines Hayes’ personal courage and the complicated realities of America’s turn-of-the-century wars.

Kevin Moore is the Curator of Artifacts at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. He holds a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University and has authored several books. He previously taught history, humanities and other social sciences at colleges in Northwest Ohio, including Heidelberg and Lourdes University.
