Mary Knight: The Power of Words: Discussion and Book Signing

Date & Time

June 25, 2026

3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

This event is included with your Daily, Weekly or Season Chautauqua Pass.
Join award-winning children’s author, Mary Knight, in a conversation about the power of words, the role of empathy in reading and writing and the rewards and challenges of the writing life. Knight will read selections from her award-winning novels — Saving Wonder and What the Seahorse Told Me — and will be available to sign books afterward. Come with your questions and be ready to celebrate the power of our voices to make a difference in our world.

Knight is also the award-winning author of The Cat’s on my Lap! (Middleton Books) and CoreEmpathy: Literacy Learning with a Greater Purpose (National Council for Teachers of English). Awards have included two Green Earth Book awards, a Sigurd Olson honor award for nature writing, a Parents’ Choice award and a Children’s Book Council favorite for Social Studies. Knight also coaches other writers on their book-length manuscripts and conducts author visits at schools around the country.

Lakeside is near and dear to Knight’s heart, having spent many summers there as a child with her parents, brothers, grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins. She now calls Lexington, Kentucky, home where she lives with her husband, illustrator and storyteller, Jonathan Scott, and their very polite cat. She’s looking forward to being a part of Lakeside Chautauqua this summer, along with enjoying freshly baked donuts in the mornings, a wild game of shuffleboard and sunset walks by the lake — just like in the old days.
