DESCRIPTION:Join us at 2 p.m. on Mondays from June 8-Aug. 10 for Science Rocks!\, a popular program for ages 6-12. Each week features interactive experiments and engaging activities designed to spark curiosity and make science fun. There’s no cost to participate\, though select sessions require pre-registration.\n \nSCHEDULE\n \nJune 8 – Oobleck & Ice Cream: Playing with States of Matter\nPavilion West Deck\nRain location: Train Station Patio\nGet messy and make a treat! Participants will explore states of matter by creating Oobleck – a unique substance that behaves as both a liquid and a solid – and making homemade ice cream. This session is led by Thomas DeHaas Jr.\, a fifth- and sixth-grade science teacher at Danbury Local School who specializes in hands-on\, inquiry-based learning.\n \nJune 15 – Water Quality Monitoring Using the Hydrolab\nPavilion West Deck\nRain location: Pavilion Upper Room\nTest real Lake Erie water samples while learning how scientists measure pH\, temperature\, dissolved oxygen\, turbidity and more. Participants will also use a Secchi disk and create a mini version to take home. This session is led by Thomas DeHaas Jr.\, a fifth- and sixth-grade science teacher at Danbury Local School who specializes in hands-on\, inquiry-based learning.\n \nJune 22 – Air Apparent\nPavilion West Deck\nRain location: Pavilion Upper Room\nExplore how air works through demonstrations focused on pressure\, resistance and movement – and how these forces impact everyday life. This session is led by Herm Dunwald\, a retired educator with 27 years of teaching experience and a longtime science instructor and volunteer.\n \nJune 29 – Oobleck & Ice Cream: Playing with States of Matter\nPavilion West Deck\nRain location: Train Station Patio\nGet messy and make a treat! This session is led by Kelly Sommers\, a science instructor for Sandusky City Schools\, Director of the Sidney Frohman Planetarium & Observatory located at Sandusky High School\, and a planetarium presenter for the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center in Bay Village\, Ohio.\n \nJuly 13 – Exploring Watersheds\nPavilion West Deck\nRain location: Pavilion Upper Room\nLearn what watersheds are and why they matter through a hands-on model and live demonstrations. Participants will also test Lake Erie water and observe plankton and algae up close. This session is led by Jakob Boehler\, Field Manager for the National Center for Water Quality Research at Heidelberg University.\n \nJuly 20 – Good Vibes\nPavilion West Deck\nRain location: Pavilion Upper Room\nExperiment with sound through fun demonstrations like laughing cups\, straw kazoos and “screaming” balloons while learning how sound is created and travels. This session is led by Herm Dunwald\, a retired educator with 27 years of teaching experience and a longtime science instructor and volunteer.\n \nJuly 27 – Build a Model Rocket\nPavilion West Deck\nRain Location: Pavilion Upper Room\nPre-registration required.\nLearn how rockets work and build your own Estes model rocket to take home. Due to the lack of open space\, launching rockets will NOT be part of the program. Participation is limited to 20. Pre-registration is required. Celebrating Christmas in July (a Little Late)\nPavilion West Deck\nRain location: Train Station Patio\nCool off with a festive twist on science as we bring a bit of “snow” to summer. Create your own “snow” using Insta-Snow and learn the science behind this surprising chemical reaction. This session is led by Thomas DeHaas Jr.\, a fifth- and sixth-grade science teacher at Danbury Local School who specializes in hands-on\, inquiry-based learning.
