Chautauqua Community Worship Service: Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan, Jr.

Lakeside Chautauqua is pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan, Jr. as Preacher of the Week from Aug. 28-Sept. 1. He will lead the 10:30 a.m. Chautauqua Community Worship Service on Sunday, Aug. 28 in Hoover Auditorium. This week’s Preacher of the Week is supported by Arden & Pamela Douce.
Featuring music and the spoken Word, Michael Shirtz and guest artists will provide musical leadership during the service, while the liturgy is led by the Rev. Dr. Charles Yoost, Senior Director of Religious Life & Pastoral Care.
Following the opening prayer, children (ages 5-11) will proceed to Bradley Temple for Children’s Church with Chip Richter. There will be a message by Richter, songs, crafts, and refreshments to share. Children ages 6 and under are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
Sullivan has served as Executive Director of the Columbus-based Ohio Council of Churches since January 2019. A native of Cleveland, he is an internationally renowned ecumenist, preacher, justice advocate, journalist and death penalty abolitionist. In recognition of his work to stop executions, Sullivan was given the 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award for Social Justice by the State of Ohio’s Dr. MLK, Jr. Holiday Commission.
Sullivan is Co-President of the Disciples Justice Action Network and a member of the governing bodies of Journey of Hope, From Violence to Healing, Death Penalty Action, Restorative Justice International and the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University, a Master of Divinity degree from Lexington Theological Seminary, a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary (Dayton) and an honorary doctorate from Bethany College in West Virginia. Sullivan also holds a certificate in non-profit leadership from Jackson State University and a certificate in conflict resolution from Cornell University.
Church Pass
Guests are welcome to attend Sunday morning church services free of charge by requesting a complimentary Church Pass between 7:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday; valid until 1 p.m. The pass includes admission to Lakeside for guests and auto, but not access to the Grindley Aquatic & Wellness Campus pool.
