Community Worship: Rev. Dr. Michael Slaughter

Lakeside is thrilled to welcome Rev. Dr. Michael Slaughter, Pastor Emeritus of Ginghamsburg Church in Dayton, Ohio, as Preacher of the Week July 23-27. This week’s preacher is supported by Rev. Dr. T. Mac & Susan Hood.

Slaughter will lead the 10:30 a.m. Chautauqua Community Worship Service on Sunday, July 23 in Hoover Auditorium.

Michael Shirtz and guest artists will provide musical leadership during the service, while the liturgy will be led by Rev. Dr. Charles Yoost, Senior Director of Religious Life & Pastoral Care.

Following the opening prayer, children (ages 5-11) will proceed to Bradley Temple for Children’s Church with Chip Richter. There will be a message by Richter, songs, crafts, lemonade and cookies to share. Preschoolers are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Better known as a chief dreamer and spiritual entrepreneur of ministry marketplace innovation, Slaughter took a 90-member congregation to more than 4,000 members. His call to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted challenges all to wrestle with God and their God-destinies.

Slaughter is Pastor Emeritus at Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church (UMC), which was named one of the top 50 churches in the U.S. by The Church Report in 2005 and 2006. The publication also named him as one of the top 50 Most Influential Christians in America.

His life-long passion to reach the lost and set the oppressed free has now made him a tireless and leading advocate for the children, women and men of Darfur, Sudan, which was named by the U.N. as the worst humanitarian crisis in today’s world. He will unfold his work in his sermon, entitled “I Believe; Help my Unbelief.”

Slaughter is an ordained Elder within the UMC, holding a Doctor of Ministry. In 2003, he was named Distinguished Evangelist by the Foundation for Evangelism and twice has received the Denman Evangelism Award from the foundation recognizing his leadership in promoting the UMC’s historic commitment to evangelism.

Writing about his ministry and life passion, Slaughter is the author of multiple books, including The Christian Wallet: Spending, Giving & Living with a Conscience, GOSPEL: Rebel JesusDare to Dream and Shiny Gods.

Join Slaughter for Faith for Living Hour at 9 a.m. Monday-Thursday in Orchestra Hall.  Slaughter will give the sermon at Vespers by the Lake at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Steele Memorial Bandstand.

Slaughter will also be our featured preacher at Lakeside’s Camp Meeting on Sunday, July 23 at 7 p.m. This event will take place in a tent on Hotel Lakeside lawn as part of the historic 150th  Anniversary Celebration.
