HIMA: Artist Faculty Recital

On Wednesday, Aug. 3, join Harpa International Music Academy (HIMA) at 7:30 p.m. in Drackett Hall for their Artist Faculty Recital. Throughout HIMA’s week-long summer academy at Lakeside, program faculty and participants will perform a series of concerts open to the public.

Their first recital at Lakeside features solo and chamber music performances by HIMA’s world-class faculty members Sibbi Bernhardsson (violin), Angela Cheng (piano), Keith Robinson (cello), Ari Vilhjalmsson (violin) and Eric Wong (viola) along with a pre-recorded conversation with acclaimed composer Jeffrey Mumford, whose work for solo violin will be performed.

About Harpa International Music Academy (HIMA):

Inspired by their Icelandic sister festival, Harpa International Music Academy (HIMA), HIMA-USA is a new, intergenerational, U.S.-based intensive summer music academy focusing on the study and performance of string solo and chamber music. HIMA-USA will hold its inaugural festival in Lakeside Chautauqua from August 1-5.

HIMA-Iceland was founded in 2013 to offer high level training for music students through solo and chamber music instruction, master classes, seminars, social events, and concerts in Reykjavik’s iconic, world-class concert venue, Harpa Concert Hall. In addition to serving Icelandic music students, HIMA-Iceland draws participants from around the world including Europe, the Americas and Asia.

HIMA-Iceland’s artistic director, Sibbi Bernhardsson, is also the co-founder and artistic director of HIMA-USA. Along with his wife and co-founder, HIMA-USA executive director Sally Takada, Berharadsson has curated a festival with three key program elements — a string quartet intensive for advanced pre-formed quartets, a junior strings intensive and a chamber music workshop for adult amateur string players. Serving an intergenerational mix of musicians, each program enhances and inspires the others, fostering a supportive community of chamber music lovers.

Throughout the week, participants will experience a full immersion in string playing, listening and performing through coaching, string technique workshops, master classes, and performances while they take part in the Chautauqua experience at Lakeside.
