As part of Chautauqua Jazz Week Experience, join the artists-in-residence for an improvisation workshop on Tuesday, June 14 from 1:30-5 p.m. at Hoover Auditorium for players of all levels. Learn how to approach playing over basic and more advanced chord progressions, using various scales and melodic concepts, and how and what to listen for in playing as a soloist and with a group. Through a series of break out sessions, large group demonstrations, a master class, and a jam session, participants will develop their skills in improvisation, understanding the human voice as a vehicle of interpretation, explore legendary artists and their recordings, and more.
This workshop is a great opportunity for those wanting to expand their playing, or simply learn more about improvising on their instruments or voice.
Registered participants are encouraged to attend the Chautauqua Lecture: The Legends of Jazz with Dwight Bailey & Michael Shirtz at Tuesday, June 14, 10:30 a.m. in Orchestra Hall as part of their exploration in improvisation experience. Ending the day are the special 8 p.m. Jazz Backstage programs at Hoover Auditorium. Workshops participants are encouraged to attend these evening concerts and will be invited up to close out the night with a jam tune.
Registration begins May 1.
Workshop fee: $35 ($20 for those with a Chautauqua Season Pass)
School Groups and groups larger than 5 should call the Programming Office for special registration rates.
