Labor Day weekend is just around the corner. Plan the ultimate family getaway to Lakeside, Ohio!

The holiday weekend includes our signature Chautauqua programs, with a lineup of entertainment, education, worship, fireworks, swimming, fitness classes, miniature golf, tennis, pickleball, shuffleboard and smuch more. Shopping and dining in Lakeside’s downtown business district is available throughout the weekend to pick up last-minute mementos.

Lakeside is offering standard rooms at Hotel Lakeside and the Fountain Inn starting at $119 per night, per room from Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 2024.

FRIDAY, AUG. 30

Farmers’ Market
8:30 a.m.-12 p.m., Lakeside Schoolhouse
Stop by the last Farmers’ Market of the season to shop for the freshest ingredients. Local growers always bring the best variety of seasonal produce, baked goods, cut flowers, honey and more. 

LHS Recycle Sale
9 a.m.-4 p.m., South Auditorium
Support the Lakeside Heritage Society (LHS) by attending the Recycle Sale. Want first dibs on this year’s merchandise? Early bird hours are 9-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30 with $5 admission. All proceeds help support the Heritage Society’s mission to preserve, promote and advance the history of Lakeside, the Marblehead Peninsula and the Chautauqua Movement in America. Historic Tram Tour
10:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m., Hotel Lakeside Lawn
Learn about the history that shaped the community we experience today. Along with facts and dates, the tour includes anecdotes about key figures and their impact on Lakeside’s history. Reservations are $5/person and are available to purchase at the Lakeside Chautauqua Administration Office, cash only. The tram has only 9 seats, so early registration is strongly encouraged.

Matinee Movie: “Tomorrowland”
1 p.m., Orchestra Hall
Bound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory. The movie is free, but Lakeside Chautauqua values donations to support these types of programs. (PG, 2h 10m)

World Affairs Forum
3:30 p.m., Fountain Inn Aigler Room
The World Affairs Forum presents an opportunity for thoughtful discussion on international events and ongoing world issues. The dialogue is to promote further learning about world affairs and is not a political forum.

Concert in the Park: The Special Consensus
7 p.m., Steele Memorial Bandstand
Two-time Grammy-nominated bluegrass band The Special Consensus has been entertaining crowds with their contemporary sound for more than four decades. Band leader and founder Greg Cahill is a recipient of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) Distinguished Achievement Award and was inducted into the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America’s Hall of Greats. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be held in Hoover Auditorium. 

SATURDAY, AUG. 31

Labor Day Weekend Sailing Race
8 a.m., Lakevue Marina
Weather permitting, all participants are to meet at Lakevue Marina, located one mile outside the W. Second Street Gate, at 8 a.m. for a skipper’s meeting to determine the course. The Labor Day Weekend Sailing Race starts promptly at 9:30 a.m.

Items for sale include housewares, linens, furniture, lawn equipment and more.

Rhein Center Open Studio & Rock Painting
10 a.m.-1 p.m., Rhein Center
Rhein Center Open Studio allows guests to participate in the fun, creative atmosphere of the arts center without registering for classes. Stop by to buy an item to paint and decorate or perhaps drop into a class.

Matinee Movie: “Megamind”
1 p.m., Orchestra Hall
Evil genius Megamind finally defeats his do-gooder nemesis, Metro Man, but is left without a purpose in a superhero-free world. The movie is free, but Lakeside Chautauqua values donations to support these types of programs. (PG, 1h 35m)

Music: Gary Cover
2-4 p.m., Pavilion West Deck
Gary Cover is a solo performer, musician and singer-songwriter who plays the best of classic rock in his unique style.

Perry Park Restrooms & Gatehouse Ribbon Cutting
4 p.m., Perry Park
Celebrate the completion of the new Perry Park restrooms and gatehouse facility, an added feature and convenience for Wednesday night picnics, family playground time, relaxing along Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile and playing pickleball or tennis.

The Sounds of Soul
7:30 p.m., Hoover Auditorium
Back by popular demand, relive the hits of Motown and beyond with The Sounds of Soul. This group of talented singers, dancers and songwriters will perform Motown favorites mixed with some of the greatest pop and R&B hits ever written. This high-energy show features hits from The Temptations, The Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, The Supremes, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Barry White and more.

Fireworks
9:30 p.m., Lakefront
Following The Sounds of Soul’s performance, fireworks will offer a spectacular finale to the day. A barge will launch fireworks near the north end of the Dock, weather permitting. In the case of inclement weather, fireworks will move to Sunday, Sept. 1.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 1

Lakefront Worship Service
8:30 a.m., Steele Memorial Bandstand
This informal worship service includes prayer requests, Christian hymns, contemporary songs, an inspiring message and the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The service is led by Rev. Dr. Scott Wilson, Lakefront Worship Coordinator, and Rev. Dr. Charles Yoost, Senior Director of Religious Life & Pastoral Care.

Lakeside United Methodist Church Service
9 a.m., Lakeside United Methodist Church
This traditional church service offers meaningful worship with a biblical focus and great music. The service is led by Rev. Richard Thewlis.

Community Worship with Rev. Dr. Charles Baoyue Jr.
10:30 a.m., Hoover Auditorium
Rev. Dr. Charles Baoyue Jr. will serve as Guest Preacher. Featuring music and the spoken Word, Michael Shirtz and the Chautauqua Choir will provide musical leadership, while the liturgy is led by Rev. Dr. Charles Yoost, Senior Director of Religious Life & Pastoral Care. After the opening prayer, children are invited to meet Chip Richter for a procession to Bradley Temple for Children’s Church.

Labor Day Weekend Lunch
12-2 p.m., Hotel Lakeside Lawn
Celebrate the end of the summer at the Labor Day Weekend Lunch. The menu features grilled favorites of hamburgers, brats, hot dogs and shredded chicken, with sides of macaroni & cheese, baked beans, potato salad and chips. Water and pop are also available.

Music with The Clams
12-2:15 p.m., Pavilion Jennings East Deck
The Clams play positive, classic rock & roll with a message to stir the soul. Comprised of a collection of lifetime friends, The Clams present a wide, eclectic range of their favorite songs that are guaranteed to move your heart and have you on your feet dancing.

LHS Recycle Sale
1-4 p.m., South Auditorium
Items for sale include housewares, linens, furniture, lawn equipment and more. The sale on Sunday is half-price.

Kids Setting Sail
2:30-4:30 p.m., Lakeside Sailing Center
Volunteers from the Society of Old Salts provide free sailing rides for children (ages 5-10), weather permitting. Those who participate are given Sunfish boat rides courtesy of veteran sailors.

Heidelberg University Marching Band
2:45 p.m., Hoover Auditorium Porch
The Heidelberg University Marching Band will gather on the Hoover Auditorium Porch at 2:45 p.m. and then march to the Steele Memorial Bandstand for a concert at 3:15 p.m. The band will play a variety of music.

Summer Closing Celebration
7 p.m., Hoover Auditorium
To cap Lakeside’s 151st Chautauqua season, the community will gather for the Summer Closing Celebration. The evening will begin with singing led by Chip Richter and John Wilkie and a colorful presentation of slides will follow, depicting highlights of the summer and featuring all four pillars: Religion, Education, Arts and Recreation. Remarks will be made by community members, and all participants will be invited to light a candle of hope.

MONDAY, SEPT. 2

LHS Recycle Sale
9 a.m.-12 p.m., South Auditorium
Items for sale include housewares, linens, furniture, lawn equipment and more. The sale on Monday is by donation.

End of the Season Shuttle Parade
7 p.m., starts from Pavilion Circle
Every year, the shuttles are put to rest on Labor Day. To mark the close of another successful shuttle season, the drivers will end the day with a parade. All are invited to join the parade behind the shuttles with your golf cart, or by showing your appreciation for the drivers along the route by ringing bells, banging pots or cheering.

The parade starts at the Pavilion Circle, heads south on Maple Avenue and turns left on Third Street. It then turns right on Walnut Avenue and proceeds through the South Gate and ends with a brief ceremony in the parking lot.


ADMISSION & PARKING

Lakeside Chautauqua requires guests and residents to purchase a Chautauqua Pass and Auto Pass to enter the grounds between May 31-Sept. 2, 2024. There are a variety of passes to choose from depending on the length of your visit. Guests ages 4 & under and 90 & older enjoy free admission. View 2024 Admission & Parking Fees.

Purchasing a Chautauqua Pass includes admittance to the grounds, as well as access to entertainment in Hoover Auditorium, the Pool (on a first-come, first-served basis), Wellness Center, and a variety of religious, educational, cultural arts and recreational opportunities.

For your convenience, purchase Daily and Weekly Chautauqua Passes and Auto Passes online. You can also purchase passes at the Hoover Ticket Office, located at 115 W. Third Street, or upon entering the gates of Lakeside. All passes are valid from the day of use until 7 p.m. the following day.
