Pre-Concert Lecture with Dr. Christina Fuhrmann

This season, Lakeside Chautauqua is partnering with the Conservatory of Music of Baldwin Wallace University to provide lectures prior to select Lakeside Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concerts. These talks prepare listeners to more fully understand and enjoy the evening’s symphony concert.

Join us at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4 in the Fountain Inn Aigler Room for a Pre-Concert Lecture with Dr. Christina Fuhrmann, titled “Music of the North.”

Throughout music history, composers have been fascinated by the North. For Northern composers like Norwegian Edvard Grieg, their homeland inspired nationalistic works.

Few pieces are better known than Grieg’s Peer Gynt, incidental music for a play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, inspired by a Norwegian fairytale.

Other composers. like German Max Bruch, looked to the North as an exotic unknown. Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra draws on Scottish folk melodies to weave a romantic picture of an idealized Northern land.

This lecture looks at how both composers were inspired by the sounds of the North.

Fuhrmann serves as Professor of Music History & Literature and Editor of Bach: Journal of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute at Baldwin Wallace University.

Her research has been published in The Oxford Handbook of the British Musical, Nineteenth-Century Music Review, The Journal of Musicological Research and The Encyclopedia of Romantic Literature.

In 2012, she published an edition of Henry Bishop’s 1819 adaptation of “Le Nozze di Figaro” with A-R Editions. Her book, Foreign Opera at the London Playhouses, from Mozart to Bellini, received the Diana McVeagh Prize for Best Book on British Music by the North American British Music Studies Association.

The event is finished.
