With Memorial Day weekend just around the corner, the Lakeside grounds are starting to come alive. Imagine what life was like nearly 150 years ago when Lakesiders boarded steamboats and landed at the dock in anticipation of their Lakeside visit. Today, we board airplanes and jump in cars with that same anticipation of returning to our favorite place on the lake.
‘RISE ABOVE: Tuskegee Airmen & WASP’ Traveling Exhibit
As we prepare for Memorial Day weekend, Lakeside is thrilled to host the Commemorative Air Force ‘RISE ABOVE: Tuskegee Airmen & WASP’ traveling exhibit from May 25-29. You won’t want to miss this unique exhibit, which is a fully functioning movie theater featuring two compelling short films that tell the story of the Tuskegee Airmen and the WASP, as well as the obstacles they both overcame to be able to serve their country during WWII. This immersive experience is housed in a climate-controlled 53’ semi-trailer with a 160-degree panoramic screen, creating the feeling of being in the cockpit soaring above the clouds.
Heidelberg University Theatre presents Cinderella
Another extraordinary experience we’re excited to bring to Lakesiders this summer is Heidelberg University Theatre’s presentation of Cinderella on Saturday, June 4. This modern version of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella fairytale features new characters, surprising twists, unique costumes, and an unforgettable score. There will also be several workshops planned with the university’s theatre company that will introduce children to stage performance. This university collaboration is one of many that Lakeside will be initiating this summer to introduce Lakesiders to new and diverse experiences.
The OSU Alumni Band
Being from the Columbus area, I’m counting down the days until The OSU Alumni Band returns to the Hoover Auditorium stage on Saturday, June 11. This energizing show is full of marching band classics and fan favorite anthems, like “Hang on Sloopy” and “Buckeye Battlecry.”
Thank you, Programming Team
As always, I’d like to give a BIG thank you to our Programming Team for their time, leadership, and creative thinking. This group of talented individuals has been working around the clock to create a memorable Chautauqua experience that appeals to all ages and interests.
Connecting with university leadership
To strengthen our relationships with higher education schools across the state, Lakeside has been actively meeting with the leadership teams at several universities. Through these meetings, we have been brainstorming on how we collaborate and bring creative and diverse programs to Lakeside.
For this summer’s first collaboration, Lakeside welcomes Heidelberg University Theatre to present Cinderella on Saturday, June 4, as well as lead different workshops throughout the week. Also, from Aug. 29-Sept. 1, our Chautauqua Lecture Series theme week is dedicated to ‘Planning Life After School.’ Through this experience, teens (and parents!) will gain insight into navigating the road after high school to college – from how and when to apply for financial aid to writing award-winning essays. We plan to welcome several universities throughout the week to lend their expertise. Save the date!
The Lakeside Team is beginning to lay the groundwork to bring some of our Chautauqua programs online as a subscription series. The subscription series is a way to welcome Lakeside into your living room when you can’t be on the grounds or want to engage with Lakeside in the fall, winter and spring. This opportunity allows Lakeside to introduce new families and individuals to opportunities in religion, education, arts and recreation all year long. Stay tuned for more information.
Lakeside logo collaboration with World Next Door
This summer, Lakeside Chautauqua is collaborating with World Next Door and giving the business permission to order Lakeside-branded goods and apparel. The Lakeside Team has worked closely with Kim Honeycut to order items that Lakesiders can purchase as gifts and souvenirs. Visit World Next Door this summer to check out the available merchandise.
150 & Onward
Thank you for reaching out and continuing the conversation with us about preserving the Lakeside experience for future generations. This summer, we’re being deliberate about creating opportunities for us to reflect and plan for our future, together as a community. Therefore, we will continue to evolve our FAQs on our 150 & Onward webpage and are in the process of planning gatherings and conversations for us all to connect this summer. Watch our e-communications as we will be sending dates and times soon so that you can plan to participate.
The Sesquicentennial Steering Committee has been working diligently on plans for next year’s 150th celebration. One plan that has recently come to fruition is a documentary that will be aired by WGTE in Toledo, Ohio. This 30-minute segment, released in May or June 2023, will include the history of Lakeside, interviews with the community, and will be narrated by Lakesider and ‘CBS News’ Correspondent Steve Hartman.
The WGTE team recently visited Lakeside to meet with members of the Steering Committee, learn about Lakeside, and tour the grounds. As you visit this summer, you may see WGTE filming across the grounds.
As we begin our 149th season, please join me in giving a BIG thank you to the Lakeside Team and dedicated volunteers who are working tirelessly to make this season possible. We’ll be continuing to highlight the Lakeside Team’s expertise and work over the coming weeks so that you can become more acquainted with the people behind the magic. Share your gratitude as you arrive back at Lakeside or post a special thank you as we feature the team through Staff Spotlights on Facebook.
As you can see, there are already so many exciting things happening in Lakeside. We’re looking forward to welcoming you back for another great season!
