‘RISE ABOVE: Tuskegee Airmen & WASP’ Traveling Exhibit

To celebrate Memorial Day weekend in an extraordinary way, Lakeside Chautauqua is honored to host the ‘RISE ABOVE: Tuskegee Airmen & WASP’ traveling exhibit from May 25-29. This FREE Commemorative Air Force exhibit brings to life the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) through an immersive theater experience that inspires all to rise above adversity to achieve their dreams. Back by popular demand, Lakeside Chautauqua kicks off Memorial Day weekend with The Drowsy Lads, a band known for their spirited arrangements, original bluegrass compositions and true obsession for traditional Irish music.

 

Afternoon Music: Spencer Eller

Spencer Eller‘s talents on acoustic guitar and vocals lends itself well to all musical genres. From James Taylor and Johnny Cash to The Killers and Walk the Moon, he performs it all with artistry.

 

Masters of Soul

Performing a catalog of songs that never go out of style, Masters of Soul is a live celebration of the legendary songs and performers that defined Motown and soul music. Take the ultimate stroll down memory lane as this talented group recreates the style, choreography and sound of The Temptations, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder and many more.

 

Brass Band of the Western Reserve

The Brass Band of the Western Reserve returns to Lakeside to celebrate the holiday weekend. Led by Director Jay Wardeska, the premiere brass band of Northeast Ohio is known for dynamic concerts and providing vibrant brass band sound and a wide variety of repertoire.

 

Collision of Rhythm

7:30 p.m., Sunday, May 29
Hoover Auditorium
Bring the entire family to Hoover Auditorium for an evening of fun. Collision of Rhythm is a duo comprised of tap-dancing classical virtuoso, Aaron Williams, and beatbox-juggling keynote speaker, Bronkar Lee. Although there are only two of them, they fill the stage as a 12-person ensemble would, moving from instrument to instrument with a high level of skill and diversity. With drumming, tap dancing, rhythmic juggling, marimba, piano, saxophone, and so much more, the show has been described as “Stomp meets Blue Man meets Cirque du Soleil.”

Lakeside Plant Sale & Preview

Beautify your summer landscape with flowers from Lakeside’s Annual Plant Sale. A Plant Sale Preview will be on display all day Friday, May 27 near the Lakeside Schoolhouse. A wide selection of colorful annuals, herbs, hanging baskets and some perennials and vegetables will be available. Cash, credit cards and checks accepted. View Plant Sale hours.

 

Plant Sale: Container Garden Presentation

Lakeside Schoolhouse
Join Lakeside’s Master Gardener Loretta Wilken for a demonstration on how to create a beautiful container garden for the summer. Ideas and tips on how to choose your container, correct soil and which plants to select and combine will be given.

 

Lakeside Heritage Society Recycle Sale

Support the Lakeside Heritage Society by attending the Annual Recycle Sale. Want first dibs on this year’s merchandise? Early bird hours are 9-11 a.m. Friday, May 27 with $5 admission. All proceeds help support the Heritage Society’s mission to preserve, promote and advance the history of Lakeside, the Marblehead Peninsula and the Chautauqua Movement in America. Chautauqua Community Worship Service

Hoover Auditorium
Over Memorial Day weekend, Lakeside welcomes the Rev. Peter W. Marty as guest preacher at the 10 a.m. Chautauqua Community Worship Service on Sunday, May 29 in Hoover Auditorium. His sermon, titled “Your faith is somebody else’s business,” is based on Mark 6:30-44. This week’s guest preacher is supported by the Charles & Susan Baker Family Endowment. The names of those buried in the Memorial Garden at Chautauqua Park, and Lakesiders who we lost during the 2021-2022 year, will be read aloud during the service. Read Rev. Peter Marty’s bio.

 

Children’s Church

10 a.m., Sunday, May 29
Hoover Auditorium/Bradley Temple

Kids (ages 5-11) are invited to join children’s singer-songwriter Chip Richter for Children’s Church. Following the Chautauqua Community Worship Service opening prayer at 10 a.m., kids can join a parade through the aisles of Hoover Auditorium, led by Richter, that proceeds to Bradley Temple. Here, children enjoy music, movement and a message from “Mr. Chip” and his whimsical friends, as well as a fun craft and refreshments. Younger children and siblings are welcome to join but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents should meet their kids at Bradley Temple immediately following the closing prayer of the Chautauqua Community Worship Service.

 

Sunset Praise

8:30 p.m., Sunday, May 29
Pavilion West Deck
Join worship leaders John and Bonnie Wilkie for an evening of praise music, traditional hymns, moments of reflection, and spiritual renewal against the backdrop of the sun setting on Lake Erie. In the case of inclement weather, this event moves to the Lakeside United Methodist Church Sanctuary (450 Central Ave.).

 


 

Family Fun

Rhein Center Open Studio

10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, May 28
Rhein Center

New this summer, the Rhein Center will offer an Open Studio from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays from May 28-October 1. All ages are invited to decorate a wooden or paper maché item with paint, markers or stickers. No class registration required.

 

Family Yoga

4-5 p.m., Saturday, May 28
Hotel Lakeside Lawn
All ages are welcome to experience this joyful, fun Family Yoga practice. Please bring a towel or yoga mat.

 

Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony (in Village of Marblehead)

10:30 a.m., Monday, May 30
War Memorial at James Park, Village of Marblehead
This year, the Village of Marblehead will host the peninsula’s Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Clemons Cemetery (E. Main Street) and proceed to the War Memorial at James Park. All are invited to stay for the Memorial Day Ceremony.

 


 

Just for Kids

 

Lakesider Newspaper Delivery

9 a.m., Friday, May 27
Walnut Plaza

Kids ages 6-15 (or younger if accompanied by a parent or older sibling) are invited to meet at Walnut Plaza near the Legacy House, 217 Walnut Ave., to help deliver stacks of newspapers to locations in the business district. Upon completion of delivery, kids have their choice of a free ice cream coupon or miniature golf coupon.

 

Kids’ Yoga (ages 4+)

10 a.m., Saturday, May 28
Cherry Park
Join Hanna Fidler, Certified Yoga Instructor, for an interactive Kids’ Yoga experience (ages 4+). This class integrates breathing techniques, poses and fun games. Please bring a towel or yoga mat. In case of inclement weather, this class will be held in the Upper Room, above World Next Door.

Memorial Day Weekend Sailing Race

Saturday, May 28
Lakevue Marina (outside of Lakeside)
The Memorial Day Weekend Sailing Race, hosted by the Society of Old Salts (S.O.S.), will take place Saturday, May 28, weather permitting. There will be two sailboat classes, 22′ & above and 30′ & above. All participants are to meet at Lakevue Marina, located one mile outside the W. Second Street Gate, at 8 a.m. for a Skipper’s Meeting to determine the course. The race will start promptly at 9:30 a.m. off the Lakeside Dock.

 

Chair Yoga

Drackett Hall – Wellness Center
Join instructor Linda Green for a gentle form of yoga where all exercises are performed seated in a chair or standing using the chair to aid with support and balance.

 

Tennis Round Robin

Williams Tennis Campus
Join Tennis Round Robin fun and play against other competitors in levels 3.0-3.5 (Intermediate). Cost is $1.

 

Pickleball Mixer

Hubbard Pickleball Center
The Pickleball Mixer invites all ages and skill levels to play pickleball in a fun, social and friendly environment.

Lakeside Chautauqua requires guests and residents to purchase a Chautauqua Pass and Auto Pass to enter the grounds between May 27-Sept. 5, 2022. There are a variety of Chautauqua Passes and Auto Passes to choose from depending on the length of your visit. Guests ages 4 & under and 90 & older enjoy free admission. Purchasing a Chautauqua Pass and Auto Pass includes admittance to the grounds, as well as access to entertainment in Hoover Auditorium, the Pool (on a first-come, first-served basis), Wellness Center, and a variety of religious, educational, cultural arts, and recreational opportunities. Learn more about the value of your Chautauqua Pass.

For your convenience, purchase Daily, Weekly and Season Chautauqua Passes and Auto Passes online with added benefits this year. You can also purchase passes at the Hoover Ticket Office, located at 115 W. Third Street, or upon entering the gates of Lakeside during the gated season from May 27-Sept. 5, 2022. All passes are valid from the time of purchase until 7 p.m. the following day. The Lakeside Chautauqua gates will be in operation starting at 7 a.m. Friday, May 27.
