Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile
Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile begins on the east side of Lakeside with the Gundlach Garden’s towering hollyhocks and stretches to the west side where benches are scattered across Perry Park to showcase the view of the islands. Along this stretch of the southern Lake Erie shoreline sits the iconic Lakeside Pavilion and Dock, a place for sunsets, swimming and social time. As you walk past the tree-filled Central Park on a summer evening, you’re sure to hear music floating from the Steele Memorial Bandstand/Gazebo, a place that also serves as an educational venue, a wedding altar or a breezy place to listen to the waves.
Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile
Walks along the lakefront path have been a Lakeside tradition for more than 145 years. This special shoreline path is a place where sunsets are admired, worship takes place, healing begins, a marriage proposal is made, weddings are celebrated, fireworks delight, children share stories and Lakesiders engage in conversation.
Today, various programs and activities take place along Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile, including Wednesday Family Picnics, Sunday Family Night in the Park, numerous weddings and concerts at the Steele Memorial Bandstand/Gazebo, as well as recreational activities such as tennis, miniature golf, swimming and sailing.
The lakefront path is special and unique to each Lakesider. Everyone can tell a story about why it’s so important and what it means to them. Through these stories, we understand how it serves to transform the lives of each Lakesider, whether visiting for a day, week or the entire summer.
Obviously, it showcases the most dramatic view of Lake Erie where water, islands, skies and stars collide in a masterpiece of nature.
Beautiful multi-season perennial gardens of native plant are planted along the entire lakefront path from Oak Avenue to Poplar Avenue. In spring, guests experience the blooming of the daffodils along the water’s edge.
The gardens captivate the eye in every season with vibrant colors and visual interest while attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.
For more than 145 years, the shoreline has also been a place for conversation, which is core to Chautauqua. Four conversation terraces have been installed along Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile where families, groups and couples gather to enjoy an afternoon or evening discussion.
In addition to Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile, Lakeside already claims an America in Bloom national award and has participated in the Communities in Bloom competition. Lakeside also has an Annual Plant Sale, Beautification Awards and a Garden Tour. Most recently, the Memorial Garden at Chautauqua Park was established.
