Lectures & Keynotes

Education was a founding principle of the Chautauqua Movement. Lakeside continues to value life-long learning by providing educational opportunities for all ages and interests. Offerings range from expert-led lectures and Lake Erie science lessons to family arts and music programs.

Lecture Series

The hallmark of Lakeside’s education experience is the Chautauqua Lecture Series. Experts present topics ranging from history and science to cultural arts and current world affairs. 2024 Chautauqua Lecture Series Themes

  • Week 1: May 27-31 Images in Historic Paintings Explore two-dimensional art and come away with a new appreciation for paintings and conservation techniques
  • Week 2: June 3-7 | The Wild West Learn about the Native Peoples, American settlers, wildlife and how the west was changed
  • Week 3: June 10-14 | Celebrate Ohio: Presidential Museums This week showcases the U.S. Presidents who called Ohio home. Discover the unique items each presidential home and museum has in its collection
  • Week 4: June 17-21 | America’s Veterans: After the Conflict Learn about the issues American heroes faced after returning from various conflicts over our 248 years of independence
  • Week 5: June 24-28 | Journalism & Media Literacy In an ever-changing world with many different forms of news and media, it’s important to analyze and make informed judgments as users of information
  • Week 6: July 1-5 | Preserving Democracy: By the People Free and fair elections are the foundation of representative democracy. Explore ways we can ensure that elections continue to be free and fair in a polarized American political landscape. This week’s lecture series is supported by the Knobel Family Endowment
  • Week 7: July 8-12 | The Common Good Stretch, learn, grow and connect. These lectures teach us about building community
  • Week 8: July 15-19 | Artificial Intelligence Learn how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the world we live in from possibly helping resolve past national conflicts to innovative medicine
  • Week 9: July 22-26: Television: History & Future From its beginnings to its evolution, regulation and entertainment value, join others in understanding the impact of television on our lives
  • Week 10: July 29-Aug. 2: Lakeside Gardening Experience This week welcomes an array of speakers on tree preservation and planting native gardens, to nature-based therapies and ecopsychology
  • Week 11: Aug. 5-9: Latin America Labor/Migration Conditions Stay current and learn about the labor and economic conditions in Central America/Mexico and some of the forces that drive migration northward
  • Week 12: Aug. 12-16: Local Food Sourcing Discover the different foods produced locally, which are fresh, high-quality products planted by passionate individuals
  • Week 13: Aug. 19-23: Documentary Week Engage in thought-provoking documentaries and the stories behind them. Presented in collaboration with the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museum
  • Week 14 Aug. 26-30: Lakeside University Lakesiders come from different backgrounds and are a wealth of knowledge. This week is their time to shine and share their experiences and expertise with others 

Keynote Speakers

The Education Department coordinates numerous programs throughout the year; from lectures and seminars to dialogues and documentaries, a variety of learning methods are used to promote intellectual growth. Some of the topics explored include arts and culture, business, gardening, history, religion and faith, and many more!

Family & Youth Education Programs

With families in mind, Lakeside coordinates a variety of programs for youth – from science and swim lessons to songwriting and theater camp!  Learn, grow and have fun while on summer vacation. In addition to the programs on the calendar, be sure to check out the art classes at the the C. Kirk Rhein, Jr. Center for the Living Arts.

Professional Development Graduate Credit

Lake Erie College, in partnership with Lakeside Chautauqua, offers educational and cultural arts professional development for graduate credit for educators looking to renew their teaching licenses, and/or gain professional development.

Throughout the summer, Lakeside offers programming that infuses and provides many new ideas and strategies for education professionals. The two-semester hour course is $360. It is a self-paced, independent study course that allows participants to choose and attend the Lakeside programs during the summer. For questions and additional information, email Sally Schuler, Professor of Professional Development at Lake Erie College, at schuler05@gmail.com.

Course Registration

To obtain the online Registration Link and Course Code (number), contact Sally Schuler at schuler05@gmail.com. Upon enrollment, course directions and assignments will be emailed to students. Once completed, students will email it back to Sally Schuler.
