Book Discussion: “Handprints on Hubble”

With Lakeside Chautauqua’s 150th Anniversary just around the corner, we’re excited to introduce you to Lakeside Onlinea new way to connect with friends year-round, explore the Chautauqua experience from the comfort of home and catch a sneak peek of what’s in store for the Sesquicentennial Celebration next summer.

Lakeside Chautauqua is excited to welcome Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space, as one of our Chautauqua Lecture Series keynote speakers. She will take the stage of Hoover Auditorium on Wednesday, July 5 at 7:30 p.m.

In preparation for her lecture, you’re invited to join a virtual book discussion about her book Handprints on Hubble, led by Linda and Doug Huber. Connect with friends across the country to exchange thoughts, questions and ideas about this book. Lakesiders are encouraged to read selected books prior to our discussions. Pre-registration required.

About the Book

Handprints of Hubble was named one of the best biographies of 2020. In this book, Sullivan recounts her experience as part of the team that launched, rescued, repaired and maintained the Hubble Space Telescope.

Discussion Hosts: Linda & Doug Huber

Year-round Lakesiders, Linda and Doug Huber are enjoying their retirement years pursuing their passion for preserving history. Both serve on the Ottawa County Historical Society Board and are active in the Lakeside Heritage Society.

Before retiring in 2006, Linda had a career within the administrative management field and enjoys applying gained knowledge and skills to community volunteer activities. Doug recently retired as a Lorain County Community College Assistant Professor of Computer Information Science and is now Emeritus. Most of his career has been within the corporate information security and network engineering arena.

About the Author

Dr. Kathryn Sullivan is a geologist, astronaut and oceanographer who was the first American woman to walk in space, the first woman to dive to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench (the deepest part of the Earth’s oceans) and is the only person to do both. She flew on three shuttle missions, including the mission that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope.

Sullivan served as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Administrator in the Obama administration, as well as being appointed by President George W. Bush to the National Science Board. She was the inaugural Director of the Battelle Center for Math and Science Education Policy in the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University and former President and CEO of Ohio’s Center of Science and Industry.
