Lakeside is pleased to welcome back Rev. Dr. Karoline M. Lewis, Marbury E. Anderson Chair in Biblical Preaching at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, as Preacher of the Week Aug. 11-15. This week’s preacher is supported by the Rev. Dr. Charles & Barbara Yoost Endowment.

Parker will lead the 10:30 a.m. Chautauqua Community Worship Service on Sunday, Aug. 11 in Hoover Auditorium. Her sermon is titled “Love One Another” and the scripture lesson is John 13:1-17; 31b-35.

Michael Shirtz and guest artists will provide musical leadership during the service, while the liturgy will be led by Rev. Dr. Charles Yoost, Senior Director of Religious Life & Pastoral Care. Worship music for the 2024 summer season is supported by James E. Beardsley and Doris F. Beardsley.

Following the opening prayer, children (ages 5-11) will proceed to Bradley Temple for Children’s Church with Chip Richter. There will be a message by Richter, songs, crafts, lemonade and cookies to share. Preschoolers are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Lewis’ theme for the week during Faith for Living Monday-Thursday at 9 a.m. in Orchestra Hall is “Faith Filled Goodbyes: What Jesus Teaches Us About Grief, Loss, and Letting Go.” She will present her sermon, “Beloved Disciples” during Vespers by the Lake at the Steele Memorial Bandstand Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Lewis is the author of a number of books including Preaching the Word: Contemporary Approaches to the Bible For The Pulpit; Belonging: Five Keys to Unlocking Your Potential as a Disciple; A Lay Preacher’s Guide: How to Craft a Faithful Sermon; Embody: Five Steps to Leading With Integrity; SHE: Five Keys to Unlock the Power of Women in Ministry and John: Fortress Biblical Preaching Commentaries, as well as numerous articles and book chapters.

Lewis was one of a 100 religious scholars in the United States to be a part of the Values and Voices Campaign 2016 and again in 2021.

Ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Lewis holds degrees from Northwestern University (bachelor’s), Luther Seminary (Master of Divinity), and Emory University (PhD, New Testament studies and homiletics).

She is the Program Director for the Festival of Homiletics, a contributing writer for Working Preacher, and co-host of the site’s weekly podcast, Sermon Brainwave.

Lewis leads conferences, workshops and retreats internationally on the Gospel of John, the New Testament, interpreting the Bible, preaching, leadership, women in ministry and trips to the Holy Land.

Guests are welcome to attend Community Worship free of charge by requesting a complimentary Church Pass between 7:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday; valid until 1 p.m. The pass includes admittance for guests and auto. This pass must be presented to the gate attendant upon departure. If the time allotted is exceeded, the guest(s) will be charged a fee. This pass does not include access to the Grindley Aquatic & Wellness Campus pool. Complimentary passes are available for all worship services and Faith for Living Hour.
