Exploring Epiphany: The Healing Art of Poem-Making
This summer, Lakeside welcomes John Fox, a practitioner of poetic medicine, to lead a two-day workshop about “Exploring Epiphany: The Healing Art of Poem-Making.”
The workshop will take place Wednesday, July 31 and Thursday, Aug. 1 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. in the Wellness Center Drackett Hall.
The moment of surprise from your own words or the poems of others is at the heart of poetry as “epiphany.” In this workshop, explore the breadth and depth of epiphany, which comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, meaning appearance or manifestation.
Could letting go of self-judgment deepen your listening to what Spirit wants you to discover? Are you open to beauty in all its manifestations?
The creative insight gained will help you recognize a deeper, more resonant voice in yourself that may have been discouraged, hidden away or yet to be discovered.
“Most days I feel bombarded by too many words,” shares Barbara Brown Taylor, an author inspired by Fox’s teachings. “Then I talk to John and realize that poetry really is the cure. When we stop jabbering long enough to listen to what’s going on around, among and inside us – and we have someone to help us put that into the fewest, truest words available to us – the air clears and the aliveness flows through all the spaces in between.
Fox is President of The Institute for Poetic Medicine, a nonprofit founded in 2005, which brings poetic medicine to communities across the world.
He is the author of Poetic Medicine: The Healing Art of Poem-Making and Finding What You Didn’t Lose: Expressing Your Truth and Creativity through Poem-Making. His work has also been featured in the PBS documentary, “Healing Words: Poetry and Medicine.”
