LSO Concert with Isabelle Durrenberger, Violin & Jonathan Moyer, Organ

Under the direction of Music Director & Conductor Daniel Meyer, the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will perform a stirring concert with violinist Isabelle Durrenberger and organist Jonathan Moyer at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 in Hoover Auditorium. Durrenberger will perform Concerto, Violin, No. 3, K. 216, G major – Mozart, and Moyer will perform Symphony No. 3, op. 78 – Saint-Saëns.

ISABELLE DURRENBERGER, VIOLIN

Isabelle Durrenberger delivers striking performances of communicative strength and sincere artistry. Currently based in New York City, Durrenberger was chosen as a 2023-25 fellow of Carnegie Hall’s renowned Ensemble Connet program.

In 2022, she completed her graduate studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston with Soovin Kim and Don Weilerstein.

She spent the summer of 2023 making chamber music at the Marlboro Music Festival, Lake Champlain and Four Seasons Spring Workshop.

Durrenberger also enjoys exploring music through teaching. She has a private violin studio and serves on the violin faculty at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School where she teaches violin lessons and coaches chamber music.

Both of her parents are pianists and music educators. She began playing piano at age 4, but her parents noticed that she loved singing and thought she might enjoy “singing” on the violin — she began lessons at age 7.

She grew up in Columbus and graduated high school a year early. She completed her Bachelor of Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she was mentored by Jaime Laredo. Her other mentors and influences include Jennifer Koh, Sharon Robinson, Joan Kwuon, Jinjoo Cho, Jan Mark Sloman and Jun Kim.

Durrenberger has received many recognitions and awards for her musicianship. She was the winner of the 2021-22 Borromeo String Quartet Guest Award and performed alongside the quartet in Jordan Hall.

In 2020, she was highlighted as the Featured Young Artist of the Music from the Western Reserve concert series. In 2019, Durrenberger won the First Prize and Performance Prize from the Tuesday Musical Competition.

She was awarded the Milton Preves Memorial third prize at the 2018 Irving M. Klein International String Competition in San Francisco, as well as the first prize in the 2017 Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition.

She has collaborated with the Columbus Symphony, Asheville Symphony, Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and Lakeside Symphony Orchestra amongst many others.

Durrenberger was a semifinalist in the 2022 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, a semifinalist in the 2021 Young Concert Artists Audition, a candidate in the 2019 Sendai International Music Competition and 2017 Stulberg International String Competition.

She has participated in masterclasses with Mihaela Martin, Olivier Charlier, David Chan and Noah Bendix-Balgley and attended the IMS Prussia Cove in the class of Gerhard Schulz.

Durrenberger has performed several times at Carnegie Hall as a member of the New York String Orchestra Seminar.

JONATHAN MOYER, ORGAN

Jonathan Moyer is the David S. Boe Chair and Associate Professor of Organ at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He is organist of the Church of the Covenant in Cleveland and has been a visiting lecturer in organ at the Hochschule für Musik in Lübeck, Germany.

Moyer performs a vast repertoire spanning from the renaissance to the modern era and has concertized throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan.

Clevelandclassical.com has said of Moyer’s playing, “It’s delightful to hear an organ recital where everything seems so right and the playing so much in the service of the instrument and the repertoire.”

His recent concerts include St. Katharinen (Hamburg), St. Johannis (Lüneburg), Schwerin Cathedral St. Jakobi (Lübeck), Marienkirche (Berlin), Ludgerikirche (Norden), Laurenskerk (Alkmaar), the Marktkirchethe (Hannover), Blois Cathedral (France), and J.S. Bach’s complete Clavierübung III at the German Reformed Church in Budapest, Hungary.

Moyer has performed with numerous ensembles including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra, BlueWater Chamber Orchestra of Cleveland, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Oberlin Symphony Orchestra, Concert Artists of Baltimore and the Handel Choir of Baltimore.

His performances have been featured on NPR’s nationally syndicated program Pipe Dreams, and he has performed at Conventions for the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society.

At the Church of the Covenant, Moyer oversees two remarkable pipe organs (Richards Fowkes, Op. 19 and E.M. Skinner/Aeolian Skinner/Holtkamp).

His lauded CD “Voices of the Hanse,” recorded on the 1637 Stellwagen organ in Lübeck, Germany, was released on Gothic Records and features music from 17th-century North German sources. He recently recorded volume 2 on the organ by John Brombaugh at Central Lutheran Church, Eugene, Oregon.

Moyer holds degrees in organ and piano from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Peabody Institute of Music and Bob Jones University. His teachers include Donald Sutherland, Gillian Weir, James David Christie, Olivier Latry, Ann Schein and Webb Wiggins.

In 2008, he received the second prize in the Sixth International Musashino Organ Competition in Tokyo, Japan, and in 2005, he was a finalist in the St. Albans International Organ Competition.

Moyer resides in Shaker Heights, Ohio, along with his wife, organist Dr. Kaori Hongo, and sons, Christopher Sho and Samuel Kazu.

MUSICAL DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR: DANIEL MEYER

Daniel Meyer was named Music Director & Conductor of the LSO in 2019.

As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect.

In addition to collaborating with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori and Emanuel Ax, Meyer has commissioned new works by Michael Torke, Vivian Fung, Richard Danielpour and Zhou Tian.

Meyer recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and his recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany.

In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, Meyer embarked on a recording project of the concertos of American composer Lynn Purse.

In recent seasons he conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, Toledo and Knoxville Symphonies.

His critically acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra.

Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival and the Brevard Music Center.

Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009.

A native of Cleveland, Meyer studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra.

At Boston University, Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro University in 2016.
