Come celebrate the joy and surprises that come with welcoming a new pet into the family as award-winning author Mary Knight reads aloud from her picture book, The Cat’s on My Lap! She will be joined by her husband, illustrator Jonathan Scott, as they share how they collaborated to bring the book to life. Most of all, they look forward to hearing your stories about the animals and pets you love.
Knight is the award-winning author of Saving Wonder (Scholastic Press), What the Seahorse Told Me (Middleton Books), The Cat’s on My Lap! (Middleton Books) and CoreEmpathy: Literacy Learning with a Greater Purpose (National Council for Teachers of English). Her honors include two Green Earth Book Awards, a Sigurd Olson Honor Award for nature writing, a Parents’ Choice Award and recognition from the Children’s Book Council as a favorite for Social Studies. Knight also coaches writers working on book-length manuscripts and conducts author visits at schools across the country. This one-hour session is designed especially for children in kindergarten through third grade and their families.
Lakeside holds a special place in Knight’s heart. As a child, she spent many summers there with her parents, brothers, grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins. Today she lives in Lexington, Kentucky with her husband and their very polite cat. She looks forward to returning to Lakeside Chautauqua this summer and enjoying freshly baked donuts in the morning, a spirited game of shuffleboard and sunset walks by the lake — just like in the old days.
