Date & Time

Tuesday June 23, 2026

3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

This event is included with your Daily, Weekly or Season Chautauqua Pass.
Award-winning author Mary Knight returns to Lakeside for special programs and book signings on Tuesday, June 23, and Thursday, June 25.

On Tuesday, June 23 at 3:30 p.m. in the Fountain Inn Aigler Room, Knight will celebrate the joy and surprises of welcoming a new pet into the family with a read-aloud of her picture book, The Cat’s on My Lap! She will be joined by her husband, illustrator Jonathan Scott, to share how they collaborated to bring the story to life. The couple looks forward to hearing your stories about the animals and pets you love. This one-hour session is designed especially for children in kindergarten through third grade and their families.

On Thursday, June 25 from 3:30-5 p.m. in Orchestra Hall, Knight will lead a conversation about the power of words, the importance of empathy in reading and writing, and the rewards and challenges of the writing life. She will read selections from her award-winning novels, Saving Wonder and What the Seahorse Told Me, and sign books following the program. Come with your questions and be ready to celebrate the power of our voices to make a difference in our world.

Knight is the recipient of two Green Earth Book Awards, the Sigurd Olson Honor Award for nature writing, a Parents’ Choice Award and a Children’s Book Council Favorite for Social Studies.

In addition to writing, she coaches other writers on book-length manuscripts and visits schools across the country.

Lakeside is near and dear to Knight’s heart, having spent many summers here as a child with her parents, brothers, grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins. She now lives in Lexington, Kentucky with her husband and their very polite cat.

She’s looking forward to being a part of Lakeside Chautauqua this summer, along with enjoying freshly baked donuts in the mornings, a wild game of shuffleboard and sunset walks by the lake — just like in the old days. See more at maryknightbooks.com.
