North Coast Americana band Hey Mavis returns to Lakeside for a concert at the Steele Memorial Bandstand.
For more than 13 years, Hey Mavis has woven a rich musical tapestry while building a loyal following of devoted fans. Featuring heartfelt vocals, honest songwriting, blazing instrumental solos and undeniable onstage chemistry, this quartet embodies the very best of Americana music.
Banjoist and songwriter Laurie Michelle Caner and violinist and fiddler Eddie Caner, both Lakesiders, formed Hey Mavis while serving as artists-in-residence in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Producer Don Dixon discovered the group on a local Christmas compilation CD and went on to produce their first two albums. Both releases reached the top 10 on the national Folk DJ-L radio charts and earned glowing reviews worldwide. The band’s third album, produced by Yonder Mountain String Band’s Adam Aijala, features guitar work by Aijala along with a title track co-written by Chuck Auerbach, known for his work with The Black Keys.
Hey Mavis’ latest release, Silver Ribbon Dream — Songs & Stories of the Ohio & Erie Canal, is a book and CD featuring original songs by Laurie Michelle Caner and illustrations by nationally acclaimed artist Leandra Drumm. Funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the project has been praised as “unconventionally beautiful” and “startlingly original.”
The group has performed this work in cities across the East and Midwest, including appearances with several symphony orchestras. Hey Mavis has been featured on NPR’s “Mountain Stage” and “Whad’ya Know?” as well as PBS’ “Applause” and “Songs from the Center.”
The band has delivered standing-room-only performances at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival and countless sold-out shows throughout Northeast Ohio and Michigan. In 2018, Melissa Etheridge personally selected Hey Mavis as one of the headliners for her music cruise.
