1,000 Peace Cranes
Saturday, Aug. 13, join artist Daniel Dropko in a special community tradition – folding 1,000 Peace Cranes in one day to promote world peace. Lakesiders of all ages are invited to participate from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Walnut Plaza and from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the Hoover Auditorium porch.
The origami crane has become a worldwide symbol of peace since World War II and is a tradition celebrated in song and story.
Lakesiders who attend the crane folding marathon will learn about the history of the 1,000 cranes tradition from Dropko, a longtime Rhein Center artist-in-residence who has led this community folding project for many years.
“I have been folding cranes for peace at Lakeside for 17 years,” says Dropko. “The Rhein Center and this specific peace project have been the highlights of my summers all these years.”
Fold one origami crane or 100. Any contribution helps us reach our goal of 1,000 cranes in one day. Children ages 8 and under are welcome if accompanied by an adult. There is no cost to participate, and pre-registration is not required.
This peace event coincides with the evening’s Christian concert with We Are Messengers. From 6:30-7:30 p.m., before the concert, the crane folding project will move to the Hoover Auditorium Porch. Stop by to make a crane to take home or add your creation to the colorful garland that will be displayed in the Rhein Center.
