Authors & Writing: Renee Shea
Join Renee Shea for a workshop at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 26 as part of Lakeside’s Authors & Writing Series. This workshop, titled “From Memory to Memoir: Writing about the Past,” will be held in the Fountain Inn Aigler Room.
Whether intending to record family history, recall a travel experience or explore personal connections to the past, participants will look into strategies for writing about a person, place or object that holds special meaning to them. We will begin by considering a few short excerpts from published memoirs as inspiration and models for getting started. Next, participants will respond to a series of questions to stimulate reflection about their focus and lead to drafting a paragraph or two to share, as they wish, with others. The goal is to generate ideas and begin a writing journey that may develop into a legacy for a younger generation, a path into self-discovery or simply a slice-of-life to share with friends and family. It will be helpful for participants to bring a photograph or an object (or photo of the object) that will be the subject of their writing.
Renee Shea was Professor of English and Modern Languages at Bowie State University, part of the University System of Maryland, for nearly twenty years. During her tenure, she served as Director of Freshman Composition and a member of the Honors Faculty; she taught undergraduate courses in American and world literature and seminars in Rhetorical Theory and Practices in the English M.A. program. Dr. Shea frequently consults with the College Board and local school districts, especially for Advanced Placement programs. She has a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis, an M.A. from Northwestern University in Evanston IL, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
