Chautauqua Community Worship Service: Rev. Dr. Janet Forbes

Religious Life

This week’s service will be live streamed. Visit lakesideohio.com/streaming to watch on the day of the service.

Lakeside Chautauqua welcomes the Rev. Dr. Janet Forbes as Preacher of the Week from Aug. 21-25. She leads the 10:30 a.m. Chautauqua Community Worship Service on Sunday, Aug. 21 in Hoover Auditorium. This week’s Preacher of the Week is supported by the Rev. Dr. Bud Cox Endowment.

Featuring music and the spoken Word, Michael Shirtz and guest artists will provide musical leadership during the service, while the liturgy is led by the Rev. Dr. Charles Yoost, Senior Director of Religious Life & Pastoral Care.

Following the opening prayer, children (ages 5-11) will proceed to Bradley Temple for Children’s Church with Chip Richter. There will be a message by Richter, songs, crafts, and refreshments to share. Children ages 6 and under are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Forbes will also lead Vespers by the Lake at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Steele Memorial Bandstand.

Forbes is a clergy member of the Mountain Sky Conference of The United Methodist Church. She consults with congregations in transition and coaches clergy who serve in conflicted settings. She retired in 2016 after 12 years as the Senior Minister of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch, Colo.

She has served congregations in Cheyenne and Casper, Wyo.; Grand Junction and Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Nashville, Tenn., and as program director for the regional judicatory.

She enjoys innovating fresh expressions for ministry, such as the Performing Arts Academy, the Center for Spiritual Engagement, Feeding of the Five Thousand, and partnerships to educate children and grow leadership among indigenous peoples. Her writing advocates for sacred pilgrimage as a spiritual discipline.

Forbes’ education for ministry includes a master’s in Christian education from Scarritt Graduate School and a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University, both in Nashville, Tenn., and a Doctor of Ministry in church leadership in the 21st century from Drew University in Madison, N.J.
