Welcoming artists-in-residence and guest artists to Lakeside, this week celebrates Jazz through participation and attendance at workshops, lectures, concerts, and interactive performances.


THE BLUES JOURNEY

Join jazz artist Chris Coles as he explores the experience of the Blues journey through the 19th Century to today. Discover how one genre that grew out of storytelling, became the foundation for almost everything of the Popular music experience in performance, composition, and culture. From those days of the front porch storytellers to today’s artists in sold-out stadium shows, follow the story of the Blues and its impact on the global music scene.

 


 

THE LEGENDS OF JAZZ

In a conversation with bassist, composer, and author Dwight Bailey and performer, composer, and producer Michael Shirtz, explore the music, lives, and legacy of the great giants of jazz and who are the young inspiring artists of today.

 

 


 

THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ

10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 15, Orchestra Hall
Join trombonist, composer, and band leader Sam Blakeslee to explore the famous recordings, discographies and performances that impacted the world of jazz and influenced the sounds of American popular music. Relieve some of your favorite jazz listening experiences or be introduced to some new recordings of past legends and up and coming stars in the industry.

 


 

THE VOICES OF JAZZ

10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 16, Orchestra Hall
Join singers Evelyn Wright and Michael Shirtz as the explore our favorite legendary jazz singers of yesterday and today in a performance-based lecture presentation. From Billie Holiday to Nat King Cole, to Mel Tormé and Ella Fitzgerald and more, what made their voices, songs, and styles transcend to the music of the pages and into our hearts.
