Environmental Lecture Series: Climate Migration Scenarios
Terry Schwarz will present “Climate Migration Scenarios for the Great Lakes Region” as part of Lakeside’s Environmental Lecture Series. Join Schwarz at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 in Orchestra Hall.
How will climate change impact population, land use patterns and urban design approaches in Great Lakes cities? Great Lakes cities may experience population growth if people from other parts of the country relocate to avoid hurricanes, sea level rise, extreme heat, wildfires and climate-related instability. But it remains to be seen when or if this will happen.
This lecture explores future design and development scenarios for Great Lakes cities, as well as the risks of climate gentrification, the needs of existing and historically underserved communities, and the ecological imperative to protect the health of the Great Lakes basin.
Schwarz FAICP is the Director of Kent State University’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative. Her work at the CUDC includes neighborhood and campus planning, commercial and residential design guidelines and ecological strategies for vacant land reuse.
She launched the CUDC’s Shrinking Cities Institute in 2005 in an effort to understand and address the implications of population decline and large-scale urban vacancy in Northeast Ohio. As an outgrowth of the Shrinking Cities Institute, she established Pop Up City, a temporary use initiative for vacant and underutilized sites in Cleveland. She teaches in architecture and environmental regional planning from Cornell University.
The CUDC is a community service organization with a professional staff of designers committed to improving the quality of urban places through technical design assistance, research and advocacy.
Supported by the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University, the CUDC offers architectural and urban design expertise in the service of urban communities, design professionals, and Ohio’s public universities.
