The Northwestern Ohio Gladiolus Society Show, which has been held at Lakeside for more than 70 years, will take place from 3-5 p.m. Saturday August 20 and 1-4 p.m. Sunday August 21 in Wesley Lodge. This exhibition is organized by Cliff and Doris Hartline and volunteers.A variety of gladiolus arrangements will be on display. Locals may bring gladioli on Saturday morning to receive assistance in exhibiting.Gladiolus is a genus of flowering plants in the iris family. Sometimes called the “sword lily,” the most widely used English common name for this plant is simply gladiolus. The genus gladiolus contains approximately 260 species, of which 250 are native to sub-Saharan Africa, primarily South Africa. Although glads, as they are commonly called, are used to a limited extent for landscape effect, their chief value is for cut flowers.Gladioli produce tall spikes of large blossoms in a rainbow of colors. Only clear, true blue is missing; white, pink, red, purple, yellow, orange, salmon and even green gladioli are available, along with many bi-colors.The flowers will be distributed to the public, free of charge, after the show ends on Sunday at approximately 4:15 p.m. outside Wesley Lodge.
