About the Judge:

The show will be judged by artist Dennis Whalen. A New Jersey native, Whalen came to Ohio to attend The University of Akron where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1972. He accepted a job at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and had a 39-year career there. In 1986, he earned a Bachelor of fine Arts degree from The University of Akron.

He has been creating paintings for most of his life, and enjoys studying artists’ lives and their works, as well as the history of art from cave paintings to modern art. From this, as well as his academic background, comes the knowledge of how art is influenced by the religions, socio-economic and political life of each era.

Whalen’s Arts society memberships included the Artists of the Rubber City (Akron), the Ohio Plein Air Society, and the Cuyahoga Valley Arts Center. He is a signature member of the Akron Society of Artists and “The Group” created by Marblehead artist, Rick Dziak. Whalen’s work has been exhibited in Summit County Library, Akron Civic Theater, the historic Hower House, the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center and the Akron Society of Artists. He has been a regular participant in the annual Lakeside Art Show for which he has won many awards, including the first “Laura Jean Werden Award” in 2009.

Dennis and his wife Nancy have been vacationing in Lakeside for 40 years, and purchased a home in Lakeside in 1998.
