Lyman Boat Works Historical Display

In connection with the Lakeside Wooden Boat Show, the Lyman Boat Works historical display will be available to view on the Hotel Lakeside Lawn Friday, July 15 – Sunday, July 17.

Lyman Boat Works Historical Display will be onsite all weekend to tell the story of boatbuilding on the Great Lakes. To recall the nine-decade history of Lyman boats, guests are invited to enjoy a special museum display encompassing more than 3,000-square-feet of walk-through displays. Explore the world of boat building and how these classics have impacted life, sports and business on the Great Lakes.

The museum will feature artifacts from the Lyman Boat Works, historical markers and boats from each decade, hands-on activities for children, and replicas and blueprints that you can browse through at the Lyman Work Bench. Tom Koroknay will be sharing the history of these remarkable boats.

A native Ohioan and third generation woodworker, Koroknay has gained a worldwide reputation as the preeminent Lyman Boat subject matter expert, earning him the moniker “Doc Lyman.”  Tom authored the book Lyman Boats: Legend of the Lakes detailing the company’s iconic 98 years of wooden boat building history and has owned and operated his nationally renowned Lyman Boat restoration business for 40+ years.  He is also a founding member of the original Lyman Owners Association and has spoken at numerous maritime museums across the country.

In a once in a lifetime opportunity in 1988, Tom purchased all the remaining Lyman Boat Works archives and factory tooling pertaining to the company’s wooden boat production line to supplement his already flourishing Lyman Boat restoration business.  He later acquired the intellectual property rights to the famous Lyman trademark.

The Lyman Boat Works historical display features a sampling of the Lyman archives and tooling demonstrating how the Lyman Boat Works mass produced its famous “Clinker-Built” inboard and outboard runabouts using specifically designed patterns and jigs along a production line at its factory in Sandusky, Ohio.  In the display, you may also find many original black and white promotional photographs detailing the various models of boats produced at Lyman.  In all, Lyman built 60,000+ boats, making it one of preeminent names in American boat building history.
