Pre-Concert Lecture with Destinee Siebe

This season, Lakeside Chautauqua is partnering with the Conservatory of Music of Baldwin Wallace University to provide lectures prior to select Lakeside Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concerts. These talks prepare listeners to more fully understand and enjoy the evening’s symphony concert.

Join us at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8 in the Fountain Inn Aigler Room for a Pre-Concert Lecture with Destinee Siebe, titled “A Symphonic Power Trip.”

“The composition… allows us to feel its brilliance and its charm and at the same time its power.”

This excerpt from a 1996 concert review describes Nancy Galbraith’s Tormenta del Sur, the composition that will open the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra’s performance on Aug. 8.

Join Siebe ahead of the concert as she discusses a multitude of powers – sonic, social and creative – at play in the programmed works of Galbraith, William Grant Still and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

This presentation will ask the audience to consider how a composer’s social power (or lack thereof) impacts their music, and whether qualities like “brilliance” and “charm,” – as in the quoted Galbraith criticism – are true opposites of “power,” or sonic intensity.

Seibe is a musicologist, bassoonist and arts administrator originally from Louisville, Kentucky. She holds two degrees in musicology, a Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Bachelor of Music from Baldwin Wallace University.

Her research interests are primarily focused on the 20th-21st century United States.

Siebe studied bassoon and contrabassoon with Jonathan Sherwin of the Cleveland Orchestra. She performs with the Cleveland Winds and freelances throughout the area.

The event is finished.
