This season, Lakeside Chautauqua is partnering with the Conservatory of Music of Baldwin Wallace University to provide lectures prior to select Lakeside Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concerts. These talks prepare listeners to more fully understand and enjoy the evening’s symphony concert.

Join us at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2 in the Fountain Inn Aigler Room for a Pre-Concert Lecture with Dr. Christina Fuhrmann, titled “Two Romantics.”

The LSO concert features two works that were written almost 75 years apart from each other by composers who seem completely opposite.

Johannes Brahms was steeped in a highly musical time and place (19th-century Germany), while Howard Hanson struggled in an environment not particularly kind to native composers (early 20th-century America).

Yet, both wrote in the romantic style. This lecture explores how these two different composers shared common approaches to musical expression.

Fuhrmann serves as Professor of Music History & Literature and Editor of Bach: Journal of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute at Baldwin Wallace University.

Her research has been published in The Oxford Handbook of the British Musical, Nineteenth-Century Music Review, The Journal of Musicological Research and The Encyclopedia of Romantic Literature.

In 2012, she published an edition of Henry Bishop’s 1819 adaptation of “Le Nozze di Figaro” with A-R Editions. Her book, Foreign Opera at the London Playhouses, from Mozart to Bellini, received the Diana McVeagh Prize for Best Book on British Music by the North American British Music Studies Association.
