Science Rocks!

Join us at the Pavilion West Deck on July 17 at 2 p.m. for our Science Rocks! Series: “Oobleck and Ice Cream: Playing with States of Matter,” with Jakob Boehler. This program is geared for children ages 6-12

For this program we will be exploring what a watershed is, why they are important, and how people can impact water quality by using a hands-on interactive watershed model. We will focus on how the things we do on the land can negatively impact water quality, but then also explore what we can do in our everyday lives to improve water quality. You will also get hands-on experience with how scientist test the water quality of Lake Erie using specialized equipment. We will get to see live plankton, algae, and test the chemical water quality of Lake Erie at the Lakeside Chautauqua pier!

Jakob is the Field Manager for the NCWQR at Heidelberg University with more than 10 years of experience doing water quality research throughout the Lake Erie watershed. He specializes in the identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates and water quality sensor technology. Jakob maintains over 20 field stations that are part of the Heidelberg Tributary Loading Program. He also manages numerous other specialized projects currently underway by the NCWQR such as H2Ohio wetland monitoring and the Pilot Watershed Project. Through his role as Coordinator for the Sandusky River Watershed Coalition (SRWC), Jakob organizes numerous community events including river cleanups, educational workshops, school programming and youth camps focused on water quality. He is very passionate about sharing his knowledge of water quality with the public! In his free time Jakob enjoys being outdoors (especially near, on, or in the water!), hiking, gardening, and spending time with his wife and two daughters.
