C. Kirk Rhein, Jr., Center
for the Living Arts

The C. Kirk Rhein, Jr., Center for the Living Arts, also known as the Rhein Center, is located in historic Epworth Lodge at 125 W. Sixth Street on the corner of Walnut Avenue and Sixth Street. Classes in this large, open studio began in 1999, the result of a generous gift from the Rhein family and their friends in memory of their son, Kirk.

The Rhein Center provides a wide variety of classes in fine arts, crafts, performing arts and special interest classes for students of every age throughout the summer. Select classes and workshops are also offered in the fall, winter and spring. View of details.

Rhein Center Operations & Registration Guidelines

Online & Phone Registration: To view a list of classes and register online, please click the link above. Registration and payment for weekday classes begins each Thursday at 8 a.m. the week before the class starts and continues through the week, subject to availability. Summer classes will be added to the website beginning May 15 and updated throughout the summer.

Alternatively, guests may register by phone or in-person at the Rhein Center. During the summer season, call 419-798-4461, ext. 276 (off-season, ext. 347).

Parents & Guests: Only registered students and instructors will be allowed in the class areas. Those who wish to wait for students are encouraged to use the benches and picnic tables around Epworth Lodge and South Auditorium. If a student has a medical reason for assistance during class, please let the instructor know. Students under the age of 7 will need to be accompanied by one adult to remain on the Rhein Center grounds for the duration of class.

Wait List: Wait-listed students will be notified and registered by phone if a spot becomes available prior to the day of the class.

On the day of a class, if a student has not arrived within the first 10 minutes, the spot may be given to a present and waiting person. Wait-list phone calls will not be made at the time of class; a waiting student must be onsite and alert staff to their presence. If multiple students are waiting, priority will be given to those on the wait list, in order.

Refunds: The Rhein Center will offer refunds only for classes canceled due to inclement weather or instructor illness. Students who know in advance they will be unable to attend a class are asked to inform the staff, so that those on the wait list may be notified in a timely manner.

Age Ranges: The age range of every class has been thoughtfully considered and is non-negotiable. Please do not alter your age or use another person as a placeholder. If you have a particular reason to enroll in a class with a different age range, please speak with the Rhein Center Manager Jennifer Wertz (contact info below).

Hours: The Rhein Center will be open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Standard class sessions are 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m., 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2-3:30 p.m. Classes for children ages 6 & under will last 45 minutes and split the sessions above. Some classes meet outside these hours or for longer sessions. Be sure to check the class time and location when registering. From 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on select Saturdays, we offer an “Open Studio” that requires no registration. Drop in and buy a small wooden item, such as a birdhouse, trinket box or toy to paint and decorate.

Location: Classes are held at Epworth Lodge and at various locations on the Lakeside grounds.
