Society of Old Salts (S.O.S.) members may rent only one watercraft at a time per membership, at no cost; two-hour maximum applies. Rental rates apply for second watercraft rental in the same timeslot.

Please note that the Waterfront Rental Center is closed from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Guests are welcome to swim, fish or bring their own kayaks, paddleboards or sailboats to enjoy the water at their own leisure. For additional information, call (419) 798-4461, ext. 266.

Watercraft Rental Rules & Regulations

  • USCG Approved Life Jacket must be worn at all times
  • You must have an adult, ages 18+, present to sign a waiver
  • All sailors must pass a sailing test with a score of at least 80% at the Waterfront Rental Center and be cleared by the Sailing Staff to rent a sailboat
  • No person under age 12 shall operate any vessel unless under the direct visual and audible supervision of a person who is ages 18+
  • Children ages 8 and younger must have an adult, ages 18+, on board
  • No more than two people at a time are permitted on a paddleboard
  • Guests may switch kayak and paddleboard users during their rental time, however, rules and regulations apply to all watercraft passengers

Sailing Programs

SAILING CLASSES | $95 per week 
The Lakeside Sailing Center offers weekly Level I & II Sailing Classes June10 through July 29, 2024. Classes are for ages 10+. Sailing Classes are taught by U.S. Sailing Certified Instructors on Optis and Sunfish watercraft. All participants must pass a swim test on the first day of class.

Level I (Beginner) Classes: 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m., Monday-Friday: This class covers the fundamentals of sailing terminology, wind, steering, boat care, crew responsibilities, seamanship and safety. 

Level II (Intermediate): 8:30-10 a.m., Monday-Friday: In this class, sailors should already know how to rig a sailboat and be able to handle a boat on all points of sail on their own. This class builds on the basics with students learning the finer points of boat handling and sail theory. There’s an emphasis on developing confidence for independent sailing and learning currents, weather, racing rules of sailing and more. 

Registration: The cost is $95 for the week. Registration opens at 8 a.m. Thursday, the week before classes start. REGISTER NOW!

PRIVATE LESSONS | $60 per lesson
Private lessons are available for both children and adults throughout the summer depending on instructor availability. Please inquire at the Waterfront Rental Center at 419-798-4461, ext. 266.

W.O.W. SAILING CLASSES | $150 per week
Level 1 (Beginner): 11:30 a.m., June 26-June 30, 2023
Women on Water (W.O.W.) offers Level 1 (Beginner) Sailing Classes for women. Each session includes five days of classroom and on-water instruction and is certified through the U.S. Sailing Association. Classes are instructed by Celeste Cook Williams, a U.S. Coast Guard Near Coastal Master Captain, sailing teacher veteran, and co-founder of the Lakeside Sailing Center. Register early as class size is limited. Cost is $150 for the week. KIDS SETTING SAIL | Free
For decades, the love of sailing has been handed down through generations of Lakesiders. This free program offered by members of S.O.S. on Sundays from 2:30-4:30 p.m. is for children ages 5-10. Weather permitting, this program is offered weekly during the summer. Those participating are given Sunfish boat rides courtesy of veteran sailors who are committed to sharing the sailing experience with 

Summer/Winter Boat Storage

To store your boat during the summer or winter at the Lakeside Sailing Center, download and return a Boat Storage Agreement with payment to: Lakeside Chautauqua, Attn: Watercraft, 236 Walnut Ave., Lakeside, Ohio 43440. Form for 2023-2024 will be available soon.
