CLS: Appalachia — Making Visual Art with Artificial Intelligence

Date & Time

August 7, 2026

10:30 am - 12:00 pm

This event is included with your Daily, Weekly or Season Chautauqua Pass.

This interactive presentation accompanies an art exhibit exploring the intersection of technology, memory and mental well-being for older adults. It introduces the HARMONEE project — Harnessing Artificial Intelligence Resources for Mental Outcomes and Nurturing Empathy in Education — a research initiative designed to enhance psychological well-being among older adults.

The presentation will describe how the HARMONEE study was conducted and summarize key findings demonstrating how generative AI–created images of cherished memories helped promote nostalgia, joy and cognitive stimulation. Attendees will see live demonstrations of the HARMONEE intervention with guided reflections on their own life moments, including safe childhood places, meaningful mid-life achievements and hopeful coping strategies for later life.

By showcasing AI-generated imagery created with Midjourney, this session highlights how technology, art and personal history can deepen understanding, empathy and support for older adults through life review and reminiscence.
