Author of the New York Times bestseller Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation (Liveright, 2020), Kristin Kobes DuMez will present two lectures: Monday, July 24 & Tuesday, July 25 from 3 – 4:30 p.m. in Orchestra Hall. Supported by Rev. Dr. Irwin Jennings
KuMez is a writer, speaker, and scholar who explores the intersection of religion, gender, and politics. Her writing is described as “urgent and sharp elbowed,” and DuMez does not refrain from presenting the hard truths that history has to offer Americans and especially American Christians. Her unflinching examination of the American church is ultimately a call to confess, a call to lament, and a call to greater faithfulness.
An academic by training, DuMez holds a Ph. D. in U.S. history for the University of Notre Dame. She is a frequent commenter on religion and politics in the national media. DuMez teaches at Calvin University and lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with her husband, three kids, and a dog named Paco.
Her Lakeside appearance is sponsored by the late Rev. Dr. Irwin and Janet Jennings, and will be hosted by the Rev. Dr. Charles Yoost, Senior Director of Religious Life.
